Chiba University

Chiba University was founded about 130 years ago, taking its forerunner into account; and from its foundation, great efforts have been made to improve the university’s research and standing. The university charter says, “Always Aim Higher”, and it is our goal to continue the high standard of achievement set with its inception in the Meiji era.

After the incorporation of national universities in 2004, we obtained a freedom which we had never had. Yet, this has presented us with a new set of obstacles and challenges to overcome. Faced with a wide range of difficulties starting with matters of management, we will make drastic reforms to overcome these issues. Our reforms here at Chiba University will be guided by the debate about “What is the problem?”, “What is the objective?”, “What should we do?” and “How will we evaluate the results?” This will be achieved in corporation with everyone involved with the school from the students, to the educational and administrative staff.

Chiba University should produce students who learn independently and can use their talents to contribute to society, and produce research results, which benefit human beings throughout the world. So we will continue to move forward by creating new organizations to strengthen the management to achieve it, and creating a satisfactory educational environment so that our academic activities and achievements can flourish.

It is very important to understand the evolution of changes in history to accurately understand the present situation and thus enhance the further development of Chiba University I hope that you find this booklet useful as we continue on our journey to aim higher.

Kumamoto University

Welcome to Kumamoto University (KU), located in Kumamoto city in the heart of Kyushu Island, Japan. Beautiful Kumamoto is characterized by “RGB”, the three primary colors of light. R (Red) means active volcano, Mt Aso, and very warm (burning)-hearted people. G (Green) means very rich environment with a lot of green. B (Blue) means water. Kumamoto has the highest quality underground water, which is served as drinking water for people live in Kumamoto. In Kumamoto, therefore, visitors/international students can take an enjoyable time and very high quality and pleasant life, I believe. KU is one of the universities of the longest history in Japan, and now has seven Faculties, seven Graduate Schools and thirteen Research Centers/Institutes, supporting a wide spectrum of educational and research activities.

Currently, the university has more than 8,000 undergraduate students and 2,000 graduate students, including 320 international students from 39 countries. For over 100 years our university has been at the forefront of culture, advancing science and technology, and contributing to the development of the Japanese educational system.

Presently, KU is going to be more internationalized through international student exchange programs (as of the end of 2008, 82 institutes from 23 countries are our partner organizations), world-collaboration research programs with world-leading researchers at the Global Centers of Excellence (G-COE: currently three projects are going on), and other international activities. The short-term international students exchange programs (Summer Program) are conducted at both KU and the partner universities such as University of Alberta, Canada and Shanghai Normal University, China. “Kumamoto University Forum“ has also been held not only inside but also outside of Japan (e.g., Shanghai, China in 2005, Daejeon, Korea in 2006, Surabaya, Indonesia in 2008). Through these activities, KU has been contributing to the local communities and global society.

KU established four fundamental policies, Kumamoto University for you (KU4U), which have been continuously pursued:

Osaka Prefectural University

It has been four years since Osaka Prefecture University, Osaka Women's University and Osaka Prefecture College of Nursing integrated into one university, incorporated and reemerged as the Osaka Prefecture University, a Public University Corporation.

The new university comprises seven schools, each with its own graduate school: Engineering, Life and Environmental Sciences, Science, Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Nursing, and Comprehensive Rehabilitation. Among the seven graduate schools, only the School of Comprehensive Rehabilitation does not currently offer a doctoral degree, but we will start the degree program in April 2009. We are among a select group of public universities to offer this many undergraduate and graduate schools.Our fully-fledged university has established the highest standard in both research and education. With approximately 6,500 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students, our school boasts an enrollment of over 8,000 students, all actively participating in academics, research and extracurricular activities. Our 750 faculty members provide a noteworthy educational and research environment with a 10.7 to 1 student/ faculty ratio, which is relatively higher than the other public universities.

At the time of incorporation, we drew up our first medium-term goals and planning document, which covered the time period from the Fiscal Years 2005 to 2010 and laid out 211 action items. It also established numerous quantitative objectives. The most notable goals and results follow:

We had announced increasing outside research funding by 30% over pre-incorporation figures by 2010.This anticipated goal was achieved very quickly as we obtained increased funding by 30.9% in 2005 alone. Funding grew again beyond pre-incorporation figures by 80.6% in 2006, and 63.7% in 2007.In addition, 143 new projects were selected for grant-in-aid scientific research.There were 340 joint research and contract research projects, and 156 patent filings. Among the 756 universities in Japan, these numbers place our university at the rank of 25th, 17th and 14th in each perspective category.Among the 76 public universities, we rank number one in all three categories.This is a strong indicator that the integration project and incorporation have led to great developments for Osaka Prefecture University.

We have two spacious campuses, the 50 hectare Nakamozu Campus and the 6 hectare Habikino Campus, both of which are situated in a beautiful natural environment. We take pride in our “green,” which we see as one of our greatest treasures. To conserve our environmental assets, we have set the goal of making our campus a biotope, thereby harmonizing nature and human activity. As a part of these efforts, we are setting up a “Web Botanical Garden”, which will introduce the campus's seasonal plants, birds, and insects. We have decided to give nicknames to campus main streets as shown in the Campus Map. We have solicited these from students and faculty, receiving 310 suggestions.

In Nakamozu campus, we are now moving forward with large-scale renovations underway. In February 2005, the “Chemical and Material Science Building” was completed. The “Educatio Building”, as a symbol of the three universities' integration, was followed in April 2008 completion of. In February 2009, we have opened the “Veterinary Science Building” in the Rinku Campus along with the “Advanced Bioscience Building” and “Science Building” in the Nakamozu Campus.
As I have mentioned above, we have passed the middle of the 2005-2010 time frame whereby our plans have been successfully reached. We are envisioning the university for the next planning stage period. We hope to come up with a vision for a better university through the opinions of faculty and other stakeholders.

The conditions surrounding Japan’s universities are growing increasingly harsh. The university-age population is decreasing; the overall economic situation is deteriorating; the international society is facing multi-faceted challenges; and Japan’s administrative and fiscal structures are undergoing severe belt-tightening exercises. With the elegance of the Ouchi-clan's predilection for the medieval court culture and the history over three-hundred years of the Mori-clan's heritage of virile simplicity and plainness, Yamaguchi stands unique and distinct among the regions of Japan. Producing talents with indefatigable human strength for challenges like Yoshida Sho'in on the eve of Japan's modernization in the mid-19th century, Yamaguchi continues to foster individuals who excel in all walks of life.

More recently, Yamaguchi was the birthplace of the Choshu Five who in 1860 (late Edo Period), under the orders of the Provincial Government, sailed to England to study at the University of London. he University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. KAUST is the realization of a decades-long vision of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

KAUST is governed by an independent, self-perpetuating Board of Trustees and supported by a multi-billion dollar endowment. The University, which is merit-based and open to men and women from around the world, adheres to these founding principles:

  • Create an international community of scholars dedicated to advanced science.
  • Welcome leaders in science, technology, commerce, business, and education through appointments and partnerships.
  • Provide researchers the freedom to be creative and experiment.
  • Embody the highest international standards of scholarship, research, education, and learning.
  • Provide unfettered access to information and share knowledge, skills, and expertise to achieve economic growth and prosperity.
  • Nurture and protect freedom of research, thought, and discourse relating to scholarly work

KAUST will pursue its research agenda through four strategic research thrusts that focus on areas of science and technology that are important to Saudi Arabia, the region, and the world:

  • Resources, Energy and Environment;
  • Biosciences and Bioengineering;
  • Materials Science and Engineering;
  • Applied Mathematics and Computational Science.

To support these thrusts, KAUST will establish multidisciplinary Research Centers.

The University is set to open in September 2009 with degrees in 11 fields of study. The core campus is located on more than 36 square kilometers along the Red Sea at Thuwal – about 80 kilometers north of Saudi Arabia's second largest city, Jeddah.
